What actually changes
CBR and CBZ are not the same picture in two wrappers.
Only the archive format. The pages inside, ordinary JPEGs or PNGs, are extracted and repacked into a ZIP. The images themselves are not touched or re-compressed.
Worth knowing first
Page order comes entirely from filename sorting, and it breaks on files numbered without leading zeros. Page 10 sorts before page 2 in almost every reader, so a badly named CBR converts into a CBZ with the same wrong order.

Is any image quality lost?
None. The files are copied, not re-encoded.
Why is CBZ better supported?
ZIP is free and every platform has a decoder. RAR's decompressor is proprietary, so many mobile readers omit it.
