What actually changes
DWG and DXF are not the same picture in two wrappers.
The same drawing database is written out in the documented DXF format. Geometry, layers, blocks and text carry across in a form other applications can parse.
Worth knowing first
Objects that only AutoCAD or its verticals understand, such as dynamic blocks, custom entities and civil objects, degrade into proxy entities. They still display, but they lose their intelligence and cannot be edited as the objects they were.

Which DXF version should I choose?
Match the recipient's software. Newer versions carry more, but an older receiver will reject a newer file outright.
Is DXF larger than DWG?
Considerably, because ASCII DXF is plain text. Binary DXF is smaller but less widely supported.
