Where the streams already fit the target container this is a lossless remux, which is close to instant. Otherwise it re-encodes, which in a browser is slow — keep it under a few hundred MB and send long videos to the cloud engine.

    What actually changes

M4V and MP4 are not the same picture in two wrappers.

Very little. M4V is Apple's variant of the MP4 container, and for an unprotected file the streams are simply copied into a standard MP4 with no re-encoding.

    Worth knowing first

M4V is also the extension Apple used for FairPlay-protected purchases from the iTunes Store. Those are encrypted, cannot be converted by any tool, and are the reason a conversion sometimes fails immediately with no useful error.

    Questions

    M4V to MP4, answered

Can I just rename the file?

For an unprotected M4V, usually yes. Conversion also normalises the container, which matters for fussy upload validators.

How do I know if mine is DRM protected?

If it came from an iTunes Store purchase or rental, assume it is. Files exported from iMovie or Final Cut are not.
