Someone on a Mac sent a .numbers file to a Windows colleague, and Excel will not open it at all.
The Numbers document is unpacked and its tables written as Excel worksheets, with formulas mapped where an equivalent function exists.
Numbers puts multiple independent tables on one canvas sheet; Excel has one grid per sheet. Each table has to be placed somewhere in that grid, so the arrangement changes and any layout that relied on floating tables side by side is rebuilt rather than preserved.
It is an Apple bundle format with no published specification and no Excel importer.
