What actually changes
XLSM and XLSX are not the same picture in two wrappers.
All the worksheets, formulas and formatting are preserved and the vbaProject binary part is dropped, because XLSX is defined as not containing one.
Worth knowing first
Anything the macros did stops happening. Buttons remain on the sheet and do nothing, and workbooks whose calculations depended on a macro will show stale values with no warning that the automation is gone.

Is this a safe way to open an untrusted workbook?
It removes the VBA project, which is the usual payload, but it is not a substitute for care with unknown files.
