What actually changes
PPT and PPTX are not the same picture in two wrappers.
The binary PowerPoint file is rewritten as OOXML. Slides, layouts, images and text become modern XML parts, and the file typically shrinks substantially.
Worth knowing first
Old decks were designed for 4:3 screens. Converting the format does not change the slide size, so the deck still shows with black bars on a modern display until the slide dimensions are changed, and changing them reflows every layout.

Do the animations survive?
Basic entrance and exit effects map across. Elaborate custom animation sequences from the 2003 era often do not.
Why is the PPTX smaller?
It is a ZIP internally, and it deduplicates images that the old format stored once per use.
