What actually changes
PPTX and PPT are not the same picture in two wrappers.
The deck is written back into the old binary format, with modern features approximated or flattened into pictures.
Worth knowing first
SmartArt is the casualty everyone hits. It becomes a static image, so the recipient cannot edit the diagram at all, and neither can you if you later convert back. Rebuild key diagrams as grouped shapes before converting.
