Convert SWF to MP4

An old Flash animation, game intro or e-learning module needs to survive now that no browser will run Flash.

Where the streams already fit the target container this is a lossless remux, which is close to instant. Otherwise it re-encodes, which in a browser is slow — keep it under a few hundred MB and send long videos to the cloud engine.

    What actually changes

SWF and MP4 are not the same picture in two wrappers.

The SWF timeline is played back and recorded frame by frame into an H.264 video. Vector animation becomes a fixed-resolution raster at a fixed frame rate.

    Worth knowing first

Only linear timeline animation converts. Anything driven by ActionScript, including games, quizzes, branching e-learning and anything waiting on a click, has no linear timeline to record. The output will be the first few seconds and then a still frame.

    Questions

    SWF to MP4, answered

Can interactive Flash content be saved at all?

Not as video. Emulators such as Ruffle run some of it in a browser, which is a different kind of preservation.

    What resolution should I use?

SWF is vector, so pick the output resolution deliberately. Rendering at 2x the original stage size keeps line art crisp.
