Convert WEBP to PNG

An image saved from a website came down as WEBP and the app it needs to go into, often an older Office build or a printer driver, refuses to open it.

    What actually changes

WEBP and PNG are not the same picture in two wrappers.

WEBP is unpacked and re-stored as PNG, which is lossless DEFLATE over raw pixels. The alpha channel comes across intact. If the WEBP was in its lossy mode, the PNG will typically be several times larger for exactly the same picture.

    Worth knowing first

An animated WEBP has many frames and PNG holds one. The conversion keeps the first frame and drops the rest, so a converted sticker or reaction image comes out as a still.

    Questions

    WEBP to PNG, answered

Does converting to PNG improve the quality?

No. PNG stores what it is given without loss, so a lossy WEBP converts to a pixel-perfect copy of a lossy image. Nothing is recovered.

Why does every image I save from the web come out as WEBP?

Sites serve WEBP because it is roughly 25 to 35 percent smaller than the JPEG or PNG equivalent. Your browser saves whatever the server actually sent.

    Is my file uploaded?

No. This pair runs in the page on your own machine, so you can watch the Network tab stay empty while it converts.
