What actually changes
AI and PNG are not the same picture in two wrappers.
The artwork is rendered at a chosen pixel size and written as PNG with transparency. Vector paths become pixels at that one resolution and stop scaling.
Worth knowing first
A modern .ai file is a PDF with Illustrator's private data attached, and the conversion reads the PDF half. Anything that only existed in Illustrator's own structures, such as certain live effects, is rendered from the stored appearance rather than recalculated.

What resolution should I ask for?
At least twice the display size. For print, work back from the physical dimensions at 300 DPI.
Why are my spot colours wrong?
Pantone and other spot inks have no exact RGB equivalent. They are converted to the nearest screen colour, which is an approximation by definition.
