What actually changes
AVI and GIF are not the same picture in two wrappers.
Frames are decoded from the AVI's legacy codec, resized, reduced to a palette and packed as a GIF. No audio survives.
Worth knowing first
Old AVI footage is usually interlaced or already blocky, and GIF's palette reduction amplifies both. Deinterlace before converting or every frame with motion picks up comb artefacts that then get dithered into permanence.
