What actually changes
AZW and EPUB are not the same picture in two wrappers.
AZW is essentially Mobipocket with Amazon's wrapper, so it is unpacked and rebuilt as a standard EPUB with proper structure and navigation.
Worth knowing first
AZW predates KF8 and its formatting was always limited to a small HTML subset. The EPUB you get is structurally correct and typographically plain, because there was never anything richer in the file to recover.

What is the difference between AZW and AZW3?
AZW is the older MOBI-based format. AZW3 is KF8, which supports modern CSS and embedded fonts.
Can I convert a purchased book?
