A book from an early Kindle library has to be opened in a non-Amazon reader.
AZW is essentially Mobipocket with Amazon's wrapper, so it is unpacked and rebuilt as a standard EPUB with proper structure and navigation.
AZW predates KF8 and its formatting was always limited to a small HTML subset. The EPUB you get is structurally correct and typographically plain, because there was never anything richer in the file to recover.
AZW is the older MOBI-based format. AZW3 is KF8, which supports modern CSS and embedded fonts.
Only if it is DRM-free. Most Kindle Store purchases are not.
