What actually changes
FB2 and EPUB are not the same picture in two wrappers.
FB2's single XML document, which describes the book semantically rather than visually, is split into EPUB sections with a generated navigation document.
Worth knowing first
FB2 stores structure such as epigraphs, verse and cited passages as semantic elements with no fixed appearance. EPUB has to render them with actual CSS, so the converter chooses a look the original never specified.

Why is FB2 a single file?
The format was designed so a whole book, including base64 images, is one self-contained XML document.
Does the metadata survive?
Yes. FB2 carries rich author, series and genre metadata that maps cleanly into EPUB.
