    What actually changes

LIT and EPUB are not the same picture in two wrappers.

The LIT package is unpacked and its HTML rebuilt as a standard EPUB, which is straightforward because LIT was itself based on the OEB specification that EPUB descends from.

    Worth knowing first

LIT titles sold commercially used Microsoft's DAS encryption tied to an activation service that was shut down in 2012. Those files can no longer be activated or converted by anything. Only unencrypted LIT files will convert.

    Questions

    LIT to EPUB, answered

    Why did Microsoft Reader disappear?

It was discontinued in 2012 and the activation servers went with it, which is what stranded protected books.

    Is LIT related to EPUB?

Distantly. Both descend from the Open eBook specification, which is why the structure translates cleanly.
