Where the streams already fit the target container this is a lossless remux, which is close to instant. Otherwise it re-encodes, which in a browser is slow — keep it under a few hundred MB and send long videos to the cloud engine.

    What actually changes

MOV and GIF are not the same picture in two wrappers.

The selected range is decoded, downscaled, palette-reduced and written as GIF frames, with the audio discarded.

    Worth knowing first

Mac screen recordings are captured at the display's full Retina resolution, so a MOV that looks like a small window is often 2880 pixels wide. Converting at native size produces an enormous GIF; halve the dimensions first and the size falls by roughly four times.

    Questions

    MOV to GIF, answered

What frame rate should I use?

10 to 15 is enough for a UI demonstration and cuts the file dramatically against 30 or 60.

Should I use a video instead?

If the destination supports it, yes. GIF is only worth it where video embedding is impossible.
