What actually changes
XCF and PNG are not the same picture in two wrappers.
The layer stack is composited as it appears with the current visibility settings and written as a flat PNG with alpha.
Worth knowing first
XCF is GIMP's internal format and its structure changes between major versions with no stability promise. A file saved in a recent GIMP can be unreadable to older tools entirely, which is why XCF should never be used as a delivery format.

Can I get the layers back?
No. The PNG is a single flattened image. Ask for the XCF itself, or for per-layer exports.
Do layer modes render correctly?
The common ones do. Some GIMP-specific blend modes have no direct equivalent and are approximated.
