Convert FLAC to MP3

A lossless music library is too large for a phone, a car stereo or an old MP3 player.

    What actually changes

FLAC and MP3 are not the same picture in two wrappers.

The FLAC is decoded to PCM and encoded as MP3. A typical album drops from around 300 MB to around 80 MB at 256 kbps, and the tags carry across from Vorbis comments to ID3.

    Worth knowing first

MP3 cannot store above 48 kHz, so a 24-bit 96 kHz studio FLAC is downsampled as well as compressed. That is fine for listening and wrong for archiving, so keep the FLAC files as the master copies.

    Questions

    FLAC to MP3, answered

    Can I hear the difference?

At 256 kbps or above, in a normal listening environment, almost nobody can. In a mastering studio on monitors, sometimes.

    Does the album art survive?

Usually. Very large embedded artwork sometimes exceeds an ID3 frame limit and gets dropped, so check one file before converting a whole library.
