Convert MP3 to WAV

An MP3 has to go into an audio editor, a DAW, a CD burner or a piece of hardware that only reads PCM.

    What actually changes

MP3 and WAV are not the same picture in two wrappers.

The MP3 is decoded back to raw PCM samples and written as WAV. From this point no further compression loss occurs, which is what editing software wants.

    Worth knowing first

Nothing is restored. The frequencies the MP3 encoder threw away are not in the file, so the WAV is a big, honest copy of a lossy signal. Anyone claiming a conversion improves quality is describing the file size, not the sound.

    Questions

    MP3 to WAV, answered

Will the WAV sound better than the MP3?

No. It sounds identical and takes about ten times the space.

Is this good enough for a CD?

It will burn, at 44.1 kHz 16-bit. The audio quality is still limited by whatever the MP3 preserved.

Why does my WAV have a small gap at the start?

MP3 encoders add padding at the beginning and end. Good decoders strip it using the LAME header; not all do.
