Convert PSD to JPG

A working Photoshop file needs to become something a client, a printer or an upload form will accept, and it is currently hundreds of megabytes.

    What actually changes

PSD and JPG are not the same picture in two wrappers.

The composite is flattened and JPEG-compressed. The size drop is dramatic, because a PSD stores every layer, every mask and often a full-size preview alongside them.

    Worth knowing first

A PSD saved in CMYK converts to RGB on the way to JPEG, and saturated cyans and oranges shift visibly. If the file is going to print, ask for a press-ready PDF or TIFF rather than a JPEG.

    Questions

    PSD to JPG, answered

Why is my PSD so much larger than the JPG?

It is storing the whole editable document: every layer at full size, masks, history metadata and a flattened preview. The JPEG stores one flattened image.

    What happens to transparent areas?

They are filled with white. JPEG has no alpha channel.
