    What actually changes

PDF and TIFF are not the same picture in two wrappers.

Each PDF page is rendered to a raster at a chosen DPI and stored as a page inside a single multi-page TIFF. Vector text becomes pixels, so the resolution you pick is the resolution you keep.

    Worth knowing first

200 DPI bitonal is the convention these systems expect and it produces small files with CCITT Group 4 compression. Rendering the same document at 600 DPI in colour can make the TIFF larger than the PDF by a factor of fifty.

    Questions

    PDF to TIFF, answered

    What DPI should I choose?

200 for records and fax workflows, 300 if the output will be OCRed or reprinted. Higher is rarely useful and always expensive.

    Is the text still searchable?

No. A TIFF is a picture of the page. Anything that needs to search it has to OCR it first.
