    What actually changes

DOC and PDF are not the same picture in two wrappers.

The binary Word 97-2003 document is parsed, laid out and written as fixed PDF pages with embedded fonts.

    Worth knowing first

Files this old often reference fonts that no longer exist on any current machine, and some carry macros that will not run and were never part of the visible content anyway. Expect small spacing shifts against how the document looked in 2004.

    Questions

    DOC to PDF, answered

    Do I need Microsoft Word?

No. The engine renders the document itself.

What if the .doc is actually an RTF or a renamed file?

It is detected by content rather than extension, so mislabelled files still convert. Extension mismatches are extremely common in old archives.
